The 5 Most Common Questions I Get About Wooden Surfboards

Hey everyone, how’s it going?

I’ve put together a list of the 5 most common questions I get about wooden surfboards as a shaper.

These are very common questions, and they come up every day, both on my social media and from students in my Online and In-Person Workshops.

Let’s go to the questions and answers:

  1. How do wooden surfboards float in the water?

It makes perfect sense when someone asks me about the buoyancy of wooden surfboards, since they’re less conventional. It’s a valid and very frequent question.

The boards are made with super lightweight wood, about 300 kg/m3. In other words, even if the board were solid, it would float, since the density of water is 1000 kg/m3.

And on top of that, they’re hollow, which gives them a weight very similar to a polyurethane board and ensures high-performance surfing.

  1. Do wooden surfboards need any special care once they’re finished?

There is one essential care: don’t leave them under the sun or exposed to the elements. They are much more resistant than conventional boards, but to guarantee durability, this detail is very important.

  1. Is it possible to make any shape?

Yes! Our construction method was designed to build any type of board.

Together with the Shape3D software, it’s possible to design the outline of any surfboard, always using the same construction technique.

  1. Are the boards just for decoration?

No! Even though they look beautiful hanging on a wall, they are made to face the walls of waves.

Although they carry tradition, wooden surfboards built with my system deliver high-performance surfing, since they are modern and lightweight.

  1. And what about durability?

As long as you don’t leave the board exposed to the elements, durability is up to 4 times longer than a conventional one, without deforming over the years.

Wooden surfboards are designed for a lifetime of waves.

And those were the most common questions I’ve received as a wooden surfboard shaper.
